Green Waffle Diner @ Causeway Bay
A visit to a bustling metropolis like Hong Kong is never complete without dropping by one of their hipster cafes. Given the limited time that we had, we selected one place and it was the Green Waffle Diner – because well, I love waffles. If you are looking for more hipster cafes in Hong Kong have a look at the 48 Hours magazine article here. There are two Green Waffle Diner branches in Hong Kong, with the other being at Central.
The Green Waffle Diner @ Causeway Bay is just next to the Causeway Bay MTR and it is surrounded by the luxurious Causeway Bay shopping malls. For us, it was a much needed respite after hours of walking the streets of Hong Kong. Unlike the many cha chaan tengs that we had visited in Hong Kong, the crowd at the Green Waffle Diner was much younger, as were the staff. The service levels and the ambience were completely different from what we were used to previously in Hong Kong. You can read more about our numerous experiences at Causeway Bay in our Hong Kong Day 4 Itinerary which will be up on the site shortly.
Chocolate Ice Cream Waffle with Condensed Milk and a Smoothie!
The waffle ordering process is pretty complex – you can pick the type of waffle, followed by the toppings and the ice cream. They also have waffle ‘specials’ which is their flavour balanced concoctions with set toppings, ice cream flavourus and other additions. On hindsight we should have chosen one of their ‘specials’.
Hey, we were in Hong Kong – we had to try their condensed milk dip with their signature waffles. We chose their classic waffles with their condensed milk dip and the Apollo chocolate ice cream. The waffles were definitely very well made. They had the perfectly crispiness with a very strong fragrance that was worthy of their premium price. However, the chocolate ice cream seemed a bit ordinary and the condensed milk dip was a bit… strange. The more expensive Movenpick hazelnut ice cream may have been a better choice. Oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained. We rate the waffle dish 4/5. The waffle concoction set us back a cool HK$57.
To balance out the sinfulness in that dessert, we attempted to order a healthy smoothie – it is called the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and it contains soy milk, kiwifruit and strawberries. One sip of this super healthy smoothie and you will be refreshed immediately. Your eyes will open wide and if you were sleepy you wouldn’t be anymore. It just tastes super healthy. Yes, I hope you got the innuendo by now, it has a very very healthy taste. The smoothie set us back HK$36.
The Green Waffle Diner at Causeway Bay is definitely a very hip and chill place to hang out. They serve a delicious brunch menu as well. If you’re looking for a place to rest after a long day at Causeway Bay this is a good spot for some desserts and drinks. However, we would recommend ordering Green Waffle Diner Specials rather than custom making your own waffle.
