Dempsey Hill is the place to go for the hippest cafes and bars. It is always full on weekends, with bustling crowds looking to chill and unwind. Enter Provisions @ Dempsey, which is a retro-styled bar specialising in claypot rice and skewers!
Provisions has a well thought out concept, with crockery and titbits that hark back to the awesome 70s and 80s. The two owners of Provisions, Justin Foo and KC Rahmat, are the head chefs and bartenders as well. Between them the owners have experience working with the famous Andre Chiang from Restaurant Par Andre and managing Pangea at MBS. When the owners get fully involved in the running of a cafe, the result is usually marvelous. We were super excited to receive an invitation to check out what these two talented chaps could produce.
Service and Ordering
Provisions has your typical bar feel and vibe, with the strong retro twist. The customer service is top notch and you can help yourself to an unlimited amount of old-school snacks and titbits such as polo sweets and haw flakes.
The entire menu is two pages long, with a selection of skewers and claypot rice to choose from. They have all the usual cocktails and house pours as well as some specials that you can only find written on their blackboard. When we were there, we tried their Gin-infused Chrysanthemum and Tonic.
Provisions @ Dempsey – Mushroom Tea Claypot Rice
This is listed as “mushroom tea rice” on their menu, and it has ooling, shiitake mushrooms and egg. This is a super super healthy selection, perfect for vegetarians. The taste balance is calibrated perfectly, with the right amount of sauces and seasoning to go very well with the healthy combination of the shiitake mushrooms and greens.
Perfect for vegetarians and the health-conscious people. It is light on the wallet as well, priced at S$9.
These are their starters, and they are plates for sharing. One of their menu items is vaguely listed as vegetables, the full seasonal selection is up on their chalkboard. We tried their white radish, roast pumpkin and mackerel fish cake.
Chicken Thigh Skewers
One of our favourite skewers for the night, their chicken thigh skewer is prepared with yellow curry, lemon grass and kaffir lime.
This is a fantastic place if you are into claypot rice and chilling out at a bar on a Friday night. The atmosphere here is fantastic and you could sit here for hours with friends. The drinks selection is great as well. We definitely recommend trying out this place!
