Located at Downtown East’s E!Hub, Yam’s Kitchen is helmed by the award-winning chef Kelvin Yam, who is an International Chinese Cuisine Chefs Gold Medallist 2010 for his groundbreaking Steamed Fish Tail with Sour Spicy Sauce dish. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants to make the fish tail a centre piece on a number of their signature dishes.
Yam’s Kitchen serves an amazing spread of Chinese culinary delights, with their Curry Fish Head, Cordyceps Wanton with Crab Meat and Double-boiled Kampung Chicken Cordyceps Soup with Dried Scallops being amongst some of their really delicious dishes.
For Mother’s Day 2018, Yam’s Kitchen has an amazing 8-course set menu at only S$207.20++ for 5 people (minimum one mother), or S$414.40++ for 10 people (minimum two mothers). You get every dish in this review, minus the Curry Fish Head and the Steamed Fish Tail items. This is a super incredible value and we highly recommend this Mother’s Day set menu. This promotional price is valid only on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th May 2018.
Yam’s Kitchen – Signature Steamed Fish Tail with Sour Spicy Sauce
The sour spicy sauce is a rare combination with the steamed fish tail, and we must say that they really go well together. The sauce is tangy and addictive, and we couldn’t stop ourselves from scooping loads of it into our bowl of rice. The fish tail is surprisingly soft and succulent – it is still not as soft and delicious as the fish head, but it tasted pretty delicious nonetheless. This is a very unique dish that you won’t find at many other Chinese restaurants. We give this a fantastic 4.1/5.
Yam’s Kitchen Curry Fish Head
Curry Fish Head is one of my favourite dishes. I always find it difficult to find outstanding or exceptional Curry Fish Head in Singapore as the standard of the Chinese restaurants specialising in Curry Fish Head is really high. There is a fixed formula and the chefs rarely deviate from it. That is not to say that the average Curry Fish Head in Singapore is mediocre, but I have yet to find an instance of a Curry Fish Head at a Chinese restaurant that claims the dish as its signature deviating too much from the norm.
It’s the same at Yam’s Kitchen as well. The fish head was super soft and delicious with an ample serving of fish meat. The curry was really great as well, nothing exceptional but perfectly done. We were very happy with this dish and we give it a strong 4/5.
Mother’s Day Four Heavenly Treasures
This platter comes with Cordyceps Wanton with Crab Meat, Signature Salted Egg Fish Skin, Fragrant Wine Pork Belly and Thai Style Jellyfish. We found the wanton delicious, with the cordyceps providing just a slight kick to enhance the taste. The wine pork belly was delicious as well – just imagine your usual char siew on steroids. The salted egg fish skin does not disappoint as well, it is crispy and flavourful and we would happily buy a big pack of it to munch away 4.2/5.
Double-boiled Kampung Chicken Cordyceps Soup with Dried Scallops
The chicken really falls off the bone! It is super flavourful, tender and soft. There is a hint of cordyceps without the taste overpowering the natural super delicious chicken soup. At the bottom, you can find the remnants of the cordyceps powder – this is healthy and nourishing so make sure to finish every last drop of the soup! We rate this 4.2/5.
Crispy Prawns and Purple Sweet Potato Shoestring Fries with Lychee and Apple Mayo
You can taste the lychee! This is lychee crispy prawns and it is super delicious. There is a hint of sweetness and it goes incredible well with the mayo. The shoestring fries are really unique, being so thin, crispy and made from sweet potato. We rate this 4.2/5.
Steamed Garoupa Slices in Cordyceps Stock
This is where you get your moneys worth! Included in the Mother’s Day set is a generous serving of garoupa fish slices. The cordyceps stock is addictive and it goes very well with the garoupa fish. We rate this 4.2/5.
Final Thoughts
Yam’s Kitchen is a Chinese restaurant that serves really delicious food at affordable prices. Looking back on our super delicious meal that day, we were surprised at how nice all the dishes were, to a level of consistency that is remarkable even for a top-rated Chinese restaurant. Their Mother’s Day promotional pricing is out of this world, and we really recommend Yam’s Kitchen if you leave in the east, or if you don’t mind taking a commute down to Downtown East!
