The storefront of Antoinette

Antoinette is a famous French dessert and pastry cafe located at Lavender, Singapore. We have always been familiar with their highly rated French cake, aptly named Antoinette, which has delicious chocolate mousse infused with earl grey tea. However, the Antoinette Salted Egg Yolk Croissant bombed onto the salted egg yolk croissant scene in Singapore after it received the top ratings from a Straits Times expert panel.
Is it that great? We wade into the salted egg yolk scene for a taste.
[ Notice: Chef Pang at Antoinette has just debuted three new croissant flavours – the Chilli Crab Croissant at S$7.50, the Salted Caramel Croissant at S$6 and the Scallion Arlette at S$3.50 – have a look at Part 2 of our Antoinette review for those! ]
Service and Ordering
We came down on a weekday night for dinner, hoping for try the famous Antoinette Salted Egg Yolk Croissant. However, it had sold out by then, and simply informed us that they replenish their stocks at 11am every morning. We proceeded to make a reservation for Saturday morning. As you can see from the pictures, the interior of Antoinette is simply amazing! They have gorgeous displays and dining seats meant for royalty.
However, we note that their staff was overloaded and they could not keep up with the almost-full-house, something which they were obviously not used to in light of the recent Straits Times fame. We counted at least six wait staff including the manager, but we still had to wait almost 15 minutes for our bill and they would forget a number of simple requests.
Antoinette Salted Egg Yolk Croissant
This was really quite amazing. The first thing you would notice is that the croissant is super delicious on its own. Well, they are a French pastry and dessert cafe after all, so it would not be surprising that they would have exceptional croissants. The croissant was perfectly crispy with overflowing butteriness and it is something that we could eat by itself, everyday. The warm salted egg yolk custard went perfectly with the delicious croissant, and there was a good balance with the salted egg yolk fragrance together with the croissant’s butteriness.
However, we wonder whether the delicious French croissant would actually taste better on its own. Nonetheless, we give the Antoinette Salted Egg Yolk Croissant a super delicious rating of 4.3/5. You can get it at S$6.50.
For those that haven’t experienced the salted egg yolk craze and may be a bit turned off by the ‘salted egg yolk’, we must say that the salted egg yolk custard tastes much nicer than it sounds.
Gnocchi Carbonara
For those that have been following this blog for a while, you would know that I am actually a huge fan of spaghetti carbonara. Antoinette’s version with Italian gnocchi is something that you wouldn’t find commonly around in Singapore. Instead of the usual pasta noodles, gnocchi is a dumpling-like item which can be made from a variety of ingredients including flour, cheese, egg and potatoes. It is basically potato cubes on steroids.
There was a very strong savoury taste here, which probably comes from the aged Parmesan cheese and the white wine cream sauce. Together with the poached egg, a mouthful would give an explosion of flavours, unlike anything that you would have tasted. This is a must try for Italian carbonara lovers. We rate it 4.2/5 and it goes for S$22.50.
The Antoinette Petit
This is their famous signature namesake French dessert, the Antoinette. It comes with layers of chocolate mousse infused with a light earl grey taste. It has a super soft and crispy inside and this is another unique one-of-a-kind dessert that you won’t find anywhere else. We thoroughly enjoyed this and we give it a 4.1/5, priced at S$10.

They give you the bill in this ridiculously extravagant jewelry box
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a change from the somewhat repetitive Singapore food, look no further. With unique and delicious French food, Antoinette is a truly a MUST-TRY! Not just for their recently famous salted egg yolk croissant, but also for the other delicious French creations that you will find here. We were very satisfied with their gnocchi carbonara and their Antoinette cake.
This is definitely a great place that will impress your date!
